ABSTRACT

Disturbing high level of illicit drug use remain a problem among American teenagers . As the physical , social , and psychological  ‘home away from home’ for most youth , schools naturally assume a primary role in substance abuse education , prevention , and early identification . However , the use of random drug testing on students as a components of drug prevention programmes  requires additional , more rigorous scientific evaluation . Widespread implementation should a wait the result of . On going studies to address the effectiveness of testing and evaluating possible inadvertent harm . If drug testing on students in conducted , it should never be implemented in isolation . A comprehensive assessment and therapeutic management  programmed for the student   who test positive should be I place before any testing  is performed. Schools have the opportunity to work with parent , health care professionals , and community officials to use programmers with proven effectiveness , to identify students who show behavioral risks for drug related problems, and to make referrals to a student medical home . When use of an illicit substance is detected , schools can foster relationship with established  health care expert to assist them . A student undergoing individualized intervention for using illicit substance merits privacy . This requires that awareness of the student’s physical , and only those designed school health officials with a need to know . For the purposes of this statement , alcohol , tobacco, and inhalants are not addressed.

INTRODUCTION

Drug and alcohol abuse are important problem that affect school – age youth at earlier age than in the past . Youth people frequently being to experiment with alcohol , tobacco, and other drug during the middle school years , with a smaller number starting during elementary school. By the time students are in high school, rate of substance use are remarkable high  According to national survey data about on in three twelfth graders reports being drunk or binge drinking in the past thirty days . Many educators recognized that drug and alcohol abuse among students are significant barrier to the achievement of educational objectives . Further more , federal and state agencies and local school districts frequently mandate that school provide health education classes  to students, including content on drug alcohol abuse .

Substance abuse is not a school centered problem but one that impact  the entire community . To effect change , institutions of higher education knowledge the need to from committees and coalitions , comprised of administration , students , parents , faculty , alumni  , school are tightening , regulations strengthening  academic requirement , adjusting course scheduling and offering excellent hours for library and recreational facilities , while providing alternative alcohol- free school sponsored activates .

Risk of drug abuse increases greatly during risk of drug abuse increase greatly during  time of transition . I n early adolescents hen children advance from elementary through middle school , they  face new and challenging social and academic  situation . When they entire high school , teens may encounter greater availably of drugs , drug use by older teens , and social activates where drug are used .

The term research based means that these programmed have been rationally designed based on current scientific evidence , rigorously tested and show to produce positive results. Scientific have developed a broad range of programmed that positively alter the balance between risk and protective factor for drug abuse in families , schools and communities.

By the time they are seniors, almost 70 % of high school students will have  tried alcohol , half will have taken an illegal drug , nearly 40% will have used a prescription drug for a non medical purpose . There are many reasons adolescent use these substance , including the desire for new experience , an  attempt to deal with problems or perform better in school , and simple peer pressure . Many factors influenced whether an high school students tries drugs , including the availability of drug within the neighborhood ,

Global increase in problems of illicit drug both reflect and contribute to international tensions. The origins of some of these      tensions are clear rapid changes in political alignment , reduced family and community cohesiveness’, increased       unemployment and under employment , economic and social marginalization and increased  crime. Environment damage related to drug can be caused in essential three ways , clearing of forests or land , growth and cultivation of plants and processing of harvested plants in to drugs . Information dissemination is the most commonly  used approach to drug and alcohol. Some information dissemination approaches attempt to dramatize the danger of drug abuse by using fear – arousal technique designed to attract attention and frighten individuals in to not using drugs, accompanied by vivid portrayals of the sever adverse consequences of drug abuse . It include classroom lecture about danger of abuse , as well as educational pamphlets and other printed martial’s and short film that impart information to Sundance about different type of drugs and the negative consequents of use . Some programmed have police officers come into the classroom and discussed law enforcement issue , including drug – related crime and penalties for buying or possessing illegal drugs. Other programmers use doctors or other health professional to talk about severs , often irreversible health effect of drug use . Evaluation studies of information approaches  to drug and alcohol abuse a temporary impact on knowledge and anti drug attitudes can occurred . It has became increasing clear that the etiology of drug and alcohol  abuse is complex , and prevention strategies that really  primarily on the information dissemination are not effective in changing  behavior.

The social resistance approach is based on a conceptualization of adolescence drug abuse as resulting from pro- drug social influence from peers persuasive advertising appeal , and media portrayals encouraging drug use , along with exposure to drug using role models. These resistance skill programmed focus on skill training to increase students resistance  to negative social influence to engage in drug use , particularly peer pressure.

Environment damage related to drug can be caused in essential three ways :  clearing of forest or land , growth and cultivation of plants and processing of harvested plants in to drugs. The type of environment damage found in any country  will depend plants or chemical substance in to drugs   , or do process plants or chemical substance in to drugs , or do both.
Since coca growth wants to avoid police and military detection , they select remote and difficult terrain to clear . According to recent report , “ coca farmers cut down forests on steep hillside to erosion , instead  of expanding cultivation of rich alluvial soil on the valley floors” . An expert from Peru’s  National Agrarian University , state that coca cultivation may have resulted in deforestation of 700,000 hectors in the Amazon region . Opium poppy cultivation has  historically taken place in south East Asia , where hill tribe farmers have cleared enormous  amounts of rain forest to support their  slash and bum growth has taken place outside south East and south West Asia . Another form of damage to environment caused by growers of coca and opium results from the improper disposal of toxic waste created during the processing of the plants material into a consume drug.

Historically drug control and drug abuse consideration were not often viewed as issued of primary concern for development planners , even in the context of programmed following a basic needs strategy . This is because many development assistance programmed were devoted either to promoting economic growth or to some aspect of basic needs of the population to inter alia health or education . The economic costs of drug abuse can be categorized as direct  and indirect . Direct costs involving increased costs of police , courts , military , treatment programmers, welfare payments to drug addict and their family , as well as increased security measures by business . Indirect economic costs include the displacement of legal industries ; diminished control over the economy ; spending money for drug and inappropriate  use of money gained from drug sales ; and fiscal problems related to the inability to the tax the drug economy .

Alcohol consumption could be an important determinant of how much a high school students learn without having a strong impact on his or her decision to stay in school or attend college  . This question is fundamental and timely , given recent research showing that underage drinkers are subsection to the immediate consequent of alcohol use , including blackouts, hangovers, and alcohol poisoning and are at elevated risk of neurodegeneration , impairment in functional brain activates  and          neurocognitive defects . A common and comprehensive measures of high school students . Learning is grade point average (GPA) .GPA is an important outcome because it is a key determinant of college admission decision and of job quality for those who do not attend college. Only a few studies have explore the association between alcohol use and GPA. Wolver (2002) and William , Powell, and  Wechsler(2003) have investigated the effects of underage drinking on GPA during high school. The latter study found a negative association between high school drinking and grades , although it is not clear whether the effects are casual or the result of unobserved heterogeneity.

Understanding the relationship between teenage drinking and high school grades is pertinent given the high prevalence of alcohol use among this age cohort and recent research on adolescents brain development suggesting that early    heavy alcohol use may have negative effects. By affecting the quality of learning , underage drinking could have an impact on both college admissions an job quality independent of its effect on years of schooling or school completion .

OPERATIONAL DEFINITONS

CHALLENGE : According to Fuller and Myers “ Challenges is a condition which is defined by a considerable number of some social norms , which they cherish”

DRUG ABUSE : Compulsive, excessive and self damaging use of habit forming drug or substance , leas to addiction or dependence , serious psychological injury or psychological harms or death also called substance abuse .

ALCOHOL ABUSE :  The alcohol abuse definition is    similar to alcohol is causing in that in both cases alcohol is causing harm to the drinkers life and those around them . The difference is that those who abuse  alcohol , but are not yet alcoholics . The key to the alcohol abuse definition is not in amount of alcohol consumed but on in effect an individual .

ACTIVITES CONDUCTED OR PROPOSED

PROCEDURE

The procedure used to compete this study include  observation and data collection . A daily log was kept of all children reporting to the nurse office and counselor office . The log book include provisions for the date , time, Childs full name , presenting symptom, scubas socially, physically , intellectual behavior attitudes and education positions . These report were made available to the teacher as well as the home  . In order to keep each altered to indicate involving  the child . High level of drug  use remain a problem among high Scholl students are reporting a counselor  record . Then the use of random drug prevention programmed require additional , more rigorous scientific evaluation .

A small office with adjoining both was chosen as the nurse and counselor station . There were a great awareness about drug and alcohol abuse in the form of picture . Depending on the actual compound drug abuse including alcohol may lead to health problems, social problems, morbidity , injuries , unprotect  sex , violence deaths , accident , suicide , physical dependence or psychological addiction . Counselor conducted a universal programmed ( counselor all children in a given setting a school ) , participating all the students  in the school to crate an awareness about  the drug and alcohol abuse. There were n also conducted indicate programmers who have already begun using drugs.

Since physical examination were performed through out the session a schedule was set up where by all the children in a room were taken to the nurses office  for certain routine procedure , if these had not been completed at registration

1.      Taking of height and weight
2.      Taking blood and urine specimen for laboratory
3.      Record family problem and peer relation and result on history form .

Education , prevention , counseling  and treatment program are the most commonly utilized . Also conducted programmers such as , alcohol awareness , and substance – free social activates.

The inauguration function was done by the headmistress Mrs, Jesslet Rani G.V as per the notice by cutting the ribbon. And also the head mistress wished us good luck for a successful programmed through her speech.

The programmed started by a general introduction about the topic    “  A study on current challenges facing the secondary schools:  Drugs and alcohol abuse”

I explained the problem of  drug and alcohol abuse in school students . Students also asked their doubts and present their vie and opinion in frond of their parents . And also the students open their mind and share their problem faced in home by their parents and relatives and in school by their teachers and friends .

Then I divided the whole class in to different group and gave them a topic and ask them to discuss the topic and found out a solution for it . The students were interesting participated in the group discussion

By the time my friend soumya R.S observed the students and identifies their problems with the help of  teacher counselor in the school Mrs. Divya. After my counselor class soumya look the class about the problem of each students without any specification of students.

And she also gave the idea to tackle over the problem . She gave them some solution and guides them in a proper way .

Then I arranged the whole class in to two parts and give a topic for debate. Face students and parents were performed their points and opinion about the topic . It became more interesting . All the students were participated well.

Then I gave the students a chance for individual counseling . I got a lot of experience and came to know a few problem which faced by the students . I could find out the remedial measure and guide them .

3.FOLLW UP PHASE

As per the response of the audience the program was 100 % success. The feed back from the students were positive. The teacher counselor of the school also gave good comments.

The result of our hard work and unity were achieved as valuable response from the audience and especially from teacher and head mistress. The program was successful and ended on correct time. I think, through this program the students were well known about the violence against children in school and home.
DRUG ABUSE PROGRAMMES AT SCHOOL

School may adopt a variety of alternative to drug testing to address the issue of  substance abuse including offering after  - school programmers  .

  • Incorporating life skill training in to drug education  curricula .
  • Helping parents become better informed .
  • Provide counseling.
  • Identifying problem behavior for early  intervention .
  • Promptly referring students to health care professionals for assessment and intervention .

School based health centre’s should have the capacity to counsel   students who are in need of such treatment plans and connect students to available community resource . Educators are challenged to make the facts about drug abuse meaning to children and adolescences . Without enacting them to try drugs. There are many curricula designed for school use that have been proven to be effective and are delivered to students in way  that are interesting , interactive  and development appropriate . Although many programmed  approaches are available , some effective programme focus on enhancing students problem solving skill or aiding them  to evaluate the influence of the media  . Other effective programme help improve students self esteem , reduce stress  and anxiety or increase activities. These skill are taught by sing a combination of method including demonstration , practice , feedback and pries . Another proven approach is ‘life skill training’ , designed to teach skill to comfortable a problem – specific  focuses  mphasizing the application of skill directly to the problem of substance abuse.

Schools are appropriate setting for drug prevention programmes for reasons

·         Prevention must focus on children before their belief and exception about  substance abuse are established  .
·         School offer the most systematic way  of  reaching high school Sundance.
·         School can promote a broad spectrum of drug related educational polices  Resource for the preparation of teachers ,  counselors and other school personnel may be a valuable adjunct .

OTHER ACTIVITES

  • Classes on drug and alcohol usage and its harmful effect were conducted years.
  • Drug day is celebrating .
  • For students from classes  5 to 10 counseling facilities are arranged on a periodic basis.
  • Require that awareness of the students situation be limited to parents and the students physician.
  • Performing drug test or are considering them for student in competitive sports , other physically active extracurricular activates.
